Autumn Landscape

Autumn Landscape, 1923, Tiffany Studios
Stained glass

Designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany, this window achieves remarkable color effects without any paint. The purple hills, yellow to bluish-purple sky, orange and red trees, grey rocks, and a blue-green stream all glow with a warm, reflective light.

Reminiscent of the landscape paintings of the Hudson River School, as well as traditional Christian stained glass windows in churches and cathedrals, the window invokes the beauty of the land. The stream in the foreground, leading the eye back up to the mountains in the distance, provides a focus for meditation.
