OCLC's New Strategy, Is the Earth's Largest Library in Sight?
"OCLC (http://www.oclc.org), the largest library online cooperative,
is setting a new strategy that could move it as well as public and academic
libraries across the country and the world into an emerging, unified, virtual
library service on the Web. Much of the strategy parallels a controversial
and widely circulated think piece originally published in Searcher and
promulgated by the author, Steve Coffman, as the “Earth’s Largest Library”
(ELL). Basically, Coffman’s ELL concept
proposed using an Amazon.com-like model for interlibrary loan."

Group's InfoTrac OneFile Creates Web-Based Periodical Collection for Libraries
"Gale Group (http://www.galegroup.com) has created a massive mega-database
of 16 million records covering over 6,100 journals in its new InfoTrac
OneFile service. The service offers online access to popular magazines,
academic journals, and trade press, as well as to five newspaper indexes
and news wire archives.
Files extend back 20 years."
