STUDENT ASSOCIATION MINUTES - JANUARY 2004 The Student Council Association for the School of Information and Library Science met for the first time in 2004’s Spring semester at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 29th. Heidi Weinkam, President, welcomed everyone who attended the meeting with a printed SILSSA agenda and pizza. Officers in attendance were Vice President Hilary Gerson, Treasurer Aimee MacLagger, and Secretary Charles Moran. The first order of business that Heidi discussed was SILSSA’s movie night at Two Boots’ Den of Cin where the classic Desk Set will be shown. It will take place in late February or early March. Dean Radford said she would supply the movie. Next Heidi informed everyone that Hilary secured a date for a trip to Find/SVP for February 26th from 5:30-6:30pm. Find/SVP is a French company of information brokers for companies like Revlon. The tour will be given by Susan Edwards and will consist of a slide show. The planned trip to Baker & Taylor is postponed until late spring because the contact is on medical leave. SILSSA’s trip to H.W. Wilson is waiting for a date confirmation. Students should dress professionally for this trip and bring a resume. The Spring Break dates are March 6th-March 12th. Hilary informed everyone going on the Paris trip could meet on February 9th and February 19th at PMC for its preparation. The council was informed in brief that a Career Day is planned in conjunction with Beta Phi Mu on March 20th 11am-3pm at PMC 612. Keyword will be published 5 days after the 2/6/04 article deadline. Past-president Jerome Meyers was named one of Library Journal’s movers and shakers. Treasurer Aimee has been chosen to represent Pratt-SILS at the ALA Annual Convention in Orlando. 2004’s Banned Books Week event is to be cosponsored by Brooklyn Public Central Library, using their Plaza. The Dean then gave a report to the Student Council: Holly Hathaway is diligently organizing SILS Alumni. Howard Besser will be speaking at the Lazero Lecture held on May 2nd in the afternoon. Registration for the summer and fall semesters will be held April 3rd-16th. The Fall and Spring class schedule will be available at the same time. The February 19th Faculty Brown Bag meeting will have a guest attorney speak on the Patriot Act from 330-5pm in the PMC 6th floor conference room. The SILS tuition increase was the lowest increase of all of Pratt’s schools thanks to the Dean’s lobbying efforts. Pratt’s Student Services will be improved due to outside creditors’ survey of students. Patt Hines has commissioned the Pratt website to be improved. The MILS Grant offers 500,000 dollars to students for trainee and internship programs with the Brooklyn Public Library. The Grant wants to work with Pratt students. This was due to BPL’s director Ginnie Cooper’s influence. Miscellaneous topics quickly addressed by the council were: Announcement of a new SILSSA Webmaster who will revamp the SILSSA WebPage. Treasurer Aimee said she would come up with two dates for her Grant Writing Seminar – weekend and weekday. The Dean then excused herself. Students requested more evocative descriptions of courses, and if it is possible to receive text requirements before the semester begins. The Book Swap was discussed as a successful test. Financial Aid experiences and concerns were then discussed to end the meeting. In total there were
