Submitted by Kaura Gale, Secretary

SILSSA Officers in Attendance:

President, Aimee MacLagger

Vice President, Terra McLeod

Treasurer, Michelle Dollinger

President MacLagger opened the meeting by introducing Dean Giannini and thanking her for attending, as well as for being so involved in the planning of this year’s Library of Congress field trip.

Dean Giannini informed the group that so far, we have confirmed tours with the heads of many departments, including manuscripts. We will also all be issued access cards for the library, so please bring ID. She also suggested that those who would like to should stay for the National Book event. Next, the Dean informed us of a new course planned for Spring 2005 “Art of the Children’s Book” with Linda Cooper.

Secretary Dollinger suggested that next year the trip should be 2 days to allow for a more thorough visit.

Vice President McLeod reviewed SILSSA’s recent speaker, Laura Walth, a Public Librarian in Des Moines. Terra suggested that everyone who is interested should contact her regarding help for publicizing more speakers.

McLeod stated that she has received good feedback regarding the tours to the Social Sciences and Humanities Library’s stacks tour, and that more tour dates will be announced shortly. She then gave an update regarding the upcoming trip to ALA’s midwinter meeting in Boston: SILSSA is looking into transportation and accommodations. Anyone with recommendations is asked to let her know. McLeod will email the listserv with more information as it becomes available.

Treasurer Dollinger suggested that she would like to see SILSSA tour Ellis Island, Dean Giannini noted that she would be able to provide contacts for such a tour. Dollinger then noted that a tour to Find/SVP is scheduled for October 21.

Vice President McLeod announced that SILSSA’s spring break will be held in London, as it is more economical than Florence, and Dean Giannini’s contacts will lead to unprecedented tour opportunities. We will be spending one whole day in Oxford, and one at the British Library. More tours are also being planned.

McLeod then announced that The Banned Books display will be available for all to view on the 4th floor; SILSSA’s intention is to publicize Banned Books week.

Secretary Gale closed the meeting by calling for contributions to the Winter 04/05 edition of Keyword.
