STUDENT ASSOCIATION MINUTES - JANUARY 2005

Pratt School of Information and Library Science Student Association "SILSSA"

Meeting Minutes

January 25, 2006, 5:30 – 6:30 pm, Pratt Manhattan, Room 610

Submitted by Gayle Snible, Secretary

SILSSA Officers in Attendance:

President, Michelle Dollinger

Secretary, Gayle Snible

Treasurer, Karyn Hinkle

Michelle Dollinger started the meeting with announcements.

The first announcement was about the spring break trip, which Brian Gannon is now organizing. Michelle explained that not enough people signed up/showed interest, but that the trip could continue on an informal level. She introduced Brian so that students could approach him about the trip.

Michelle announced that the next meeting will be on Feb. 21 and that Cynthia Johnson from Pratt/ACRL will be speaking.

The Pratt Libraries Open House on Jan. 26 from 12 – 2 pm was mentioned.

Upcoming trips include the UN, Credit Suisse, Find/SVP, and CNN, which Liorah Golomb will organize.

Gayle Snible talked about the Bronx Library Center tour, scheduled for Monday, Feb. 6 at 6:30 pm.

Gayle mentioned the upcoming pizza and movie social at Two Boots' Den of Cin and asked for suggestions for the movie. Brian Gannon suggested 'The Ninth Gate' and its storyline. Several attendees thought that this recommendation was good.

Gayle also mentioned 'Keyword' and asked for participants/writers/etc. for the newsletter.

Karyn Hinkle talked about The 'Further Transactions of the Book' conference and how SILSSA will pay registration for a number of students to attend. The conference is scheduled for March 9 – 11. Discussion about transportation and lodging ensued.

The meeting was opened up for questions:

One student asked about the Pratt alumni and honor assocations. Michelle said that we could invite Beta Phi Mu to a future meeting; Gayle agreed to do this.

One student asked about Professor Bencivengo and his request for tenure being rejected. This resulted in many student issues, tenure- and non-tenure-related being asked. Somebody suggested that an open forum with Dean Giannini be planned. Michelle said that she would follow-up on this.

Peggy West-Barton introduced herself and talked about the upcoming 'America Reads/Counts' big read out scheduled for Tuesday, April 25 from 10 am-2 pm on the Pratt Brooklyn campus. She said that she would give a full presenation at an upcoming (the next?) SILSSA meeting.

Michelle adjourned the meeting.
