SLA@Pratt's special project

The Lubuto Library Project is a special program that assists street children in Zambia with literacy and learning through cataloged, organized libraries with specific collection development guidelines. This is a first for sub-Saharan Africa. Up until now, most aid goes towards distributing books to children, which has none of the benefits of a library collection, but many disadvantages.

Recently, the president and founder of the Lubuto Library Project Jane Kinney Meyers received both an award and a standing ovation from SLA at the conference in June 2007.

Backing from colleagues in the library, information and book-related professions has been the source of the majority of financial support. SLA@Pratt plans to further SLA's appreciation of the Lubuto Library Project's mission by raising money for it through bake sales, collaboration with SLA NY and through other various fund raising events.
