Pratt Institute's School of Architecture will present lectures by esteemed individuals in architecture, planning, and construction and facilities management on its Brooklyn and Manhattan campuses this spring through April 18. All lectures are free and open to the public; however, seating priority will be given to current students with Pratt identification.

“COLD war COOL digital: variable, pre-constructed, consequential” Symposium

The symposium will be presented in conjunction with “COLD war COOL digital,” an exhibition of prototypes for modernist, pre-fabricated, and globally-distributed Cold War Era housing systems (2/18-3/20, Hazel and Robert Siegel Gallery, Higgins Hall). Speakers include Adrian Forty, professor, University College London's Bartlett School of Architecture; James Garrison, adjunct associate professor, Pratt Institute School of Architecture; and Tom Wiscombe, professor, Southern California Institute of Architecture. Also participating is “COLD war COOL digital” exhibition designer Pedro Ignacio Alonso, professor, Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile and program director, Architectural Association School of Architecture. Esteemed Exhibition Curator and Pratt Institute School of Architecture Professor Catherine Ingraham will moderate.

Poet Melissa Buzzeo, a visiting assistant professor in the Humanities and Media Studies Department, School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Pratt Institute, will deliver the annual Christina Porter Art and Poetry in the Schools lecture. Buzzeo is the author of Face (Bookthug, 2009) and What Began Us (Leon Works, 2007). The lecture honors Christina Porter, the late daughter of Pratt Adjunct Professor of Architecture Brent Porter.

Kevin Daly

Kevin Daly, design principal-in-charge and co-founder of Daly Genik Architects, Los Angeles, will deliver a lecture on his work and career. Daly Genik focuses on residential and community-based projects and has received numerous awards for design excellence. Daly's work engages both the built world and academic research. He is also an advocate of the interrelationship of research and fabrication, material and form, and sustainability and livability.

Pratt Institute School of Architecture Professor Catherine Ingraham will engage in a conversation with Greg Lynn, founder of Greg Lynn FORM, Los Angeles, and a professor of architecture and urban design at UCLA, about his work and career. Lynn is an innovator in redefining the medium of design with digital technology as well as a pioneer in the fabrication and manufacture of complex functional and ergonomic forms using Computer Numerically Controlled machinery. Lynn received the 2008 Golden Lion at the Venice Architecture Biennale has been recognized by TIME and Forbes lists for his influential and innovative work in the field of architecture.

Hina Jamelle and Ali Rahim

Hina Jamelle and Ali Rahim, founders of Contemporary Architecture Practice (CAP), will deliver a lecture on their work and careers. Jamelle and Rahim started CAP in 1999 in New York City. The firm has an award-winning reputation built on immaculately designed and detailed projects ranging from products to master plans. In addition to their work at CAP, both Jamelle and Rahim hold academic positions at the University of Philadelphia, as a graduate design studio leader and a professor of design, respectively.

Bill Zahner

Bill Zahner, founder of Zahner, Kansas City (MO), will speak about his work and career. The Zahner company has engineered and produced advanced sheet metal surfaces for over 115 years. The company is a pioneer in the architectural metal industry and applies aerospace engineering to the fabrication of international art and architecture projects. Zahner's lecture is sponsored by The Ornamental Metals Institute and The Steel Institute.

Jeffrey Hou, an associate professor and chair of University of Washington's Landscape Architecture Department, will speak on the topic of “Insurgent Public Space.” Hou's research, teaching, and practice focuses on engaging marginalized communities and citizens through community design, design activism, and cross-cultural learning. He is the editor of Insurgent Public Space: Guerrilla Urbanism and the Remaking of Contemporary Cities and a co-author of Greening Cities, Growing Communities: Learning from Urban Community Gardens in Seattle (with Julie Johnson and Laura Lawson).

Mindy Fullilove, a professor of clinical psychiatry and clinical sociomedical sciences at Columbia University, will deliver a talk on public space, emergency response, and public health. Fullilove has conducted research on AIDS and other epidemics of poor communities. She has a special interest in the relationship between the collapse of communities and decline in health. From her research, she has published Root Shock: How Tearing Up City Neighborhoods Hurts America and What We Can Do About It and The House of Joshua: Meditations on Family and Place.

Michael Kimmelman, who currently serves as the The New York Times's chief architecture critic, will deliver a talk titled “Setting the Agenda for the Accountable Public Realm.” Kimmelman writes on issues of public housing, public space, infrastructure, community development, and social responsibility.

Veronica Vanterpool, executive director, Tri-State Transportation Campaign, and Noah Budnick, deputy director, Transportation Alternatives, will speak on transportation and mass transit policies and fiscal trends. Tri-State Transportation Campaign works to create more sustainable, equitable, and transit-friendly communities in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and beyond. Transportation Alternatives is a transportation advocacy organization and citywide network of tens of thousands of supporters committed to reclaiming New York City's streets for people by ensuring that New Yorkers have access to sidewalks, streets, and public transportation.

Tom Fox, co-founder, New York Water Taxi, will deliver a talk on water transportation. New York Water Taxi is a partnership venture between Fox and Douglas Durst that has been a New York fixture since 2002. The company began with a fleet of five distinctive black and yellow checkered vessels and today includes a 12 vessel fleet that encompasses its sister organization Circle Line Downtown.

Gene Russianoff of the New York Public Interest Research Group's (NYPIRG) Straphangers Campaign will speak about public transit advocacy. Straphangers Campaign was founded in 1979 by NYPIRG at a time of decline in New York's subway system. The group has been instrumental in paving the way for necessary improvements to the system and advocates for decent, safe, and affordable transportation.

St. Elin, an alumna of Pratt's Construction Management Program, has over 13 years of experience in the construction management industry. She currently works for Turner Construction Company.
