At least since the Industrial Revolution, the city has been presented as the laboratory of modernity and the engine of economic rationality. But historically the informal economy of the city has been more capillary and far reaching than the formal one, a trend that has been strengthened in the 21st century by the Global Financial Crisis of 2007-2009; the Covid-19 pandemic, the Russo-Ukrainian war, climate change, the and increasing inequality. Yet rather than taking these events as points of departure for analysis, this course provides a theoretical framework to rethink the city through the lens of informality as mainstream economic activity, bypassing the Global South/North divide.
