The profound problems facing the deteriorating Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE) are as urgent as any other challenges currently confronting the city. What conflicting concerns are preventing crucial policy development that could address this critical situation? And how does the crumbling infrastructure of the BQE encapsulate the issues inherent in creating an equitable system of transportation? Join us for a discussion exploring these and other pressing questions as we discuss the BQE, the operational and political issues surrounding decision-making about the city’s infrastructure, and how these decisions can have dramatically different racial and socio-economic impacts.

This special evening celebrates the publication of Steven Klein’s first and only monograph, published by Phaidon and edited by author Mark Holborn. Steven Klein is a showcase of the extravagant, hyperreal creations and singular vision that have made him one of the fashion world’s most influential photographers and most cunning provocateurs.
The book includes images originally published in magazines such as Interview, W, Vogue, Vogue Italia, Vogue Paris, Vogue Hommes, and i-D, among many others, and features iconic cultural figures including Madonna, Brad Pitt, Kim Kardashian, and Kanye West. Although his subjects comprise some of the most photographed people in the world, Klein has the ability to make them almost disappear into the narrative of his imagination. His images blur the line between fiction and reality, resulting in stunning tableaux that only exist within his fantastical worlds.
Klein will be in conversation about his life and career with Dennis Freedman, founding creative director of W magazine and former creative director of Barney’s.
Steven Klein has worked with notable clients including Balenciaga, Dolce & Gabbana, Tom Ford, Alexander McQueen, and Louis Vuitton. His work has also been exhibited at galleries and museums globally such as Deitch Projects, Gagosian, and the International Center of Photography, among others.
Dennis Freedman is a creative director and art director who has contributed to the visual and experiential iterations of fashion for four decades and counting. Based in New York, he was the founding creative director of W magazine and the creative director of Barneys New York. He now consults for design galleries and fashion brands including Maison Margiela and Christian Louboutin.

Mitchell is best known for originating the role of Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. His most recent work, Anthem: Homunculus, a musical podcast, was released last fall to great reviews. Join us for a compelling discussion about Mitchell’s creative process moderated by independent filmmaker and School of Art Interim Dean Jorge Oliver. A reception will immediately follow the conversation.
Mitchell has directed four feature films: How to Talk to Girls at Parties (2018), Rabbit Hole (2010), Shortbus (2006), and the legendary Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001). His numerous awards include a Teddy Award for Best Feature Film, a Sundance Directing Award, a Drama League Award, an Obie Award, and a Special Tony Award.

Don’t miss this special evening brought to you by Pratt Presents and the podcast Person Place Thing featuring one of the world’s foremost theater and visual artists, Robert Wilson.
The works for the stage created by Wilson, a Pratt alumnus, unconventionally integrate a wide variety of artistic media, including dance, movement, lighting, sculpture, music and text. His images are aesthetically striking and emotionally charged, and his productions have earned the acclaim of audiences and critics worldwide. Wilson’s artistic collaborators have included many writers and musicians such as Heiner Müller, Tom Waits, Susan Sontag, Laurie Anderson, William Burroughs, Lou Reed, Jessye Norman and Anna Calvi. Wilson’s drawings, paintings and sculptures have been presented around the world in hundreds of solo and group showings, and his works are held in private collections and museums throughout the world. Wilson has been honored with numerous awards for excellence, including a Pulitzer Prize nomination, two Premio Ubu awards, the Golden Lion of the Venice Biennale, and an Olivier Award. Wilson is the founder and Artistic Director of The Watermill Center, a laboratory for the Arts in Water Mill, New York.
Randy Cohen, host of Person Place Thing will interview Wilson. The show is based on the idea that people are particularly engaging when they speak not directly about themselves but about something they care about. Guests talk about one person, one place, and one thing that are important to them. The result? Surprising stories from great talkers.

How can higher education be transformed, and how can students be better equipped for a changing world? Renowned scholar of history and technology Cathy N. Davidson and Pratt President Frances Bronet will explore these and other questions in a special President’s Lecture Series event that launches a week-long celebration of the Presidential Inauguration.
Davidson’s work focuses on trust, data, and new collaborative methods of living and learning. She is the author of the acclaimed book The New Education: How to Revolutionize the University to Prepare Students for a World In Flux. The Washington Post has referred to Davidson as “one of the most thoughtful voices from within academia calling for a more student-centered university.” President Bronet, a distinguished educator and leader at the forefront of interdisciplinary learning, became Pratt Institute’s president in January 2018. Bronet previously served as senior vice president and provost at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago, and as acting provost and dean of the School of Architecture and Allied Arts (now the College of Design) at the University of Oregon. For more than two decades, she has worked to extend the creative boundaries by developing and publishing on multidisciplinary design curricula that connects architecture, technology, dance, and the arts.
This event is part of Pratt’s Presidential Inauguration to officially welcome and install Frances Bronet as Pratt’s 12th President.
