Pratt Institute has launched a fellowship program in design and architecture thanks to the generosity of the Diamonstein-Spielvogel Foundation, chaired by Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel. It will be awarded to two first-year graduate students, one in the School of Architecture and one in the School of Design, for their first year of graduate study at Pratt. The fellowship will be focused on students from underserved communities whose work concentrates on issues related to climate change.
Applicants to the School of Architecture programs and the School of Design programs are eligible to apply to this opportunity, and the application process is described below.
The Diamonstein-Spielvogel Fellows will be selected based on their portfolios of work that address the impacts and challenges of climate change. A call for applicants will be held in the spring prior to the fellowship year, and selection will be announced prior to the beginning of each fellowship year. The Diamonstein-Spielvogel Fellows will be awarded to two first-year graduate students, one in the School of Architecture and one in the School of Design for their first year of graduate study at Pratt, whose work and portfolios concentrate on issues related to climate change. Fellows will receive tuition support totaling $48,000 in year one of graduate study.
The Fellowship may be renewed with partnership funding from the Institute for a second and third year (dependent on graduate program duration) and to Fellows in good academic standing. For a 2-year graduate program tuition support will total $48,000 for year two of study. For a 3-year graduate program tuition support will total $48,000 in year two and $48,000 in year three.
Fellowship Criteria and Guidelines
The fellowship will be awarded to two (2) students per academic year who meet the following criteria:
- Graduate Student
- School of Architecture (1) or School of Design (1)
- Demonstrated financial need
- Demonstrated academic merit
- Students must come from a traditionally underserved and/or previously underrepresented community in the field to which they have applied, determined by application.
- The applicant should have a demonstrated interest in the issue of climate change. Preference will be granted to applicants that have already developed a body of work in the issue of climate change.
- The Fellowship will be awarded without regard to sex, race, age, creed, color, national or ethnic origin, marital status, or disability.
Fellowship Requirements
As part of Pratt’s educational mission and the Diamonstein-Spielvogel Foundation’s commitment to expanding knowledge in the arts and humanities more broadly, each Fellow will be required to participate in an outreach activity to share their project, work, or expertise in a public forum, including but not limited to an onsite or virtual program, blog post, collections tour, panel discussion, at Pratt’s discretion.
Exclusions
A student will not be eligible for the Fellowship Program if they are recipients of another Fellowship or grant during the period of the Fellowship or if they have an existing media contract.
Foreign nationals will be ineligible until they have lived in the United States for five years immediately prior to the application deadline.
