Dance/Movement Therapy at Pratt

Creative, aesthetic, and psychotherapeutic theory come together in everything we do. Movement is done in every course and is used to learn a range of therapeutic skills. Experiential processes translate the theoretical framework into personal and practical application. You’ll focus on a variety of populations over the course of two years of clinical training.

The Experience

Students in the Dance Therapy class participate in a movement exercise.

The MS in Dance/Movement Therapy is a 60-credit program for students who want a diverse skill set, balanced with a strong theoretical framework. Interdisciplinary, socially engaged, and justice-driven, our Creative Arts Therapy community is connected by a shared mission for transformative change. Pratt’s Dance/Movement Therapy program can be completed in 4 semesters of full-time study. All courses are offered on the Pratt Brooklyn campus.

Internships

We believe creative and clinical practices are best developed together, each informing and improving the other. Internships are a vital part of the hallmark experiential learning process. Much of the coursework draws directly from clinical experiences and processing of client material. Students complete internship experiences in an array of site placements, including inpatient hospitals, community mental health agencies, and school-based settings, among others.

Our Faculty

Alongside their teaching roles, our faculty are accomplished artists who integrate creative and clinical practices every day in their work.  See all Creative Arts Therapy faculty and administrators

  • 📣LAST CHANCE TO PARTICIPATE!

This is the final week to see Alex Strada’s Collective Mobilities at the Dekalb Gallery! Centered on mutual aid and redistribution, the project supports Pratt’s neighbors experiencing homelessness, including asylum seekers. Conceived by Fine Arts Civic Engagement Fellow @_alex_strada , who is also the Public Artist in Residence with NYC's Department of Homeless Services, this Project invites the Pratt community to take meaningful action.

Throughout the exhibition, Strada organized the collection of clean, lightly used clothing and new essentials for people of all ages. These donations have been loaded onto Mobile Mutual Aid sculptures and wheeled by students and volunteers to nearby shelters for immediate redistribution. Volunteers can join one last redistribution effort this Saturday, March 8, 2-4:30PM, meeting at the gallery to load and deliver donations.

While in the gallery, the sculptures have been adorned with plants grown by Project Renewal’s @projectrenewal horticultural therapy participants—still available for purchase to support their initiatives. Maps highlight housing inequities, and the show features a cyanotype fiber artwork created with shelter residents, soon to be permanently installed there.

We invite everyone to engage with Collective Mobilities for one last week, whether by visiting the exhibition, donating essentials, or volunteering for this vital redistribution effort.

🔗 Link in bio to apply!

Submissions accepted until midnight EST on Sunday, March 23, 2025

Pratt’s School of Art Dean Jorge Oliver is pleased to invite all School of Art students to submit their work for consideration to be included in a group exhibition curated by Pratt alums Olli Toppeta (History of Art and Design ‘22) and Dylan Kaleikaumaka Hill (History of Art and Design ‘23). The exhibition, presented in collaboration with the Department of Exhibitions, the Department of History of Art and Design, and the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, will take place in August and September 2025 in the Schafler Gallery in the Chemistry Building.

This exhibition will spotlight LGBTQIA+ and queer themes. Submissions are open to all Pratt School of Art students—undergraduates (including Foundation and Associate Degree students), graduate students, and the graduating class of 2025. We welcome work that engages with and reflects the diverse experiences and perspectives within the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, non-binary, pansexual, two-spirit, intersex (LGBTQIA+), or any other identity within the broad spectrum of the queer community.

The School of Art includes students in Art and Design Education, Creative Arts Therapy, Creative Enterprise Leadership, Digital Arts, Film/Video, Fine Arts, Photography, AOS Graphic Design, Illustration, Game Design and Interactive Media, and AAS Graphic Design/Illustration.

This is an excellent opportunity for students to showcase their work, build a relationship with professional curators in conceiving a group exhibition, and engage with the greater Pratt community.

We look forward to seeing your work! Thank you for applying!

Aug 5 - Sept 28, 2024
Rubelle and Norman Schafler Gallery

Curated by alums @nandewalters (‘23) and @scprosper__ (‘22).

Pratt’s School of Art Dean, @jorgeaoliver is pleased to invite you to 𝗣𝗶𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗬𝗼𝘂, 𝗣𝗶𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗲. This exhibition showcases the work of 15 students and alumni who identify with the Black, African, African-American, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Hispanic, Afro-Latinx, Black Hispanic, or Black Latinx experience or are of African diasporic descent. In selecting work for this year’s exhibition, and with the guidance of faculty supervisor, Innocent Ekejiuba, the curators were inspired by the work of Jamaican-British cultural theorist Stuart Hall and American sociologist W.E.B. DuBois to frame their vision — “The exhibition seeks to embrace the complexity of perception and representation and make the often overlooked experiences of marginalized communities visible”.
