PreCollege Program Details
Classes
With the exception of Architecture and 2D Animation (both of which require students to take Foundation as their 2nd class), students enroll in two classes of their choice. All classes are taught by Pratt faculty and require students to complete assignments outside of class time. Students are in class four days a week (Monday and Thursday + Tuesday and Friday) from 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM.
See Courses and Curriculum for a full list of classes.
Studio Hours
Studio Hours are designated time for all PreCollege students to work on assignments. Residential students are required to attend from 7-8PM, but are not required to stay for the duration unless mandated by their instructor. Studio Hours are monitored by undergraduate Pratt students acting as “Studio Mentors.”
Meals
All meals are served in the cafeteria. Residential students are required to have a meal plan that includes 19 meals per week: breakfast, lunch, and dinner Monday through Friday, and brunch and dinner on weekends.
Museum Visits
Museum visits are required for residential students to explore NYC’s cultural landscape. These visits are chaperoned by “Cultural Engagement Mentors” who help navigate public transit and exhibitions. Museum visits in previous years have included the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Guggenheim, The Whitney, Museum of Natural History, and more!
Events
Events are required for residential students, Events are key to building community and creating memorable experiences. Activities like zine-making workshops encourage self-expression and creativity, while vintage shopping trips offer fun and sustainable fashion finds. One highlight is the Coney Island trip, where students enjoy the beach, boardwalk, and Wonder Wheel. These events foster personal growth, creativity, and local cultural exploration.
Optional Activities
Optional events range from natural dye workshops to film screenings, offering a variety of activities that allow students to relax, express themselves creatively, and connect with others. They also provide an opportunity for students to meet others from different classes, fostering connections and enhancing the sense of community within the Pratt campus. These events are not required for residential students.
Free Time
Students have the opportunity to explore NYC, rest, or work on assignments during their downtime, allowing them to experience the city’s vibrant culture. Parents and guardians should be aware that PreCollege students are permitted to leave campus unchaperoned during Free Time. This time is intentionally designed to help students transition between high school and college-level expectations, encouraging independence and responsibility. While the program promotes personal growth, students are encouraged to exercise caution, maturity, and good judgment as they navigate the city.
Curfew
The curfew for residential students is 11 PM, no exceptions. Repeated curfew violations will result in expulsion from the program.
