This course is a history and theory elective seminar which looks at the technological advances seen in artistic and architectural practice. Schools of architecture have integrated output machines CNC mills, laser printers, 3d printers and robotic arms in the curriculum and designers are rapidly integrating new technologies in onsite fabrication. We will research output machines, the designers that use them, and their effect in the world through a theoretical and critical lens. The questions we will consider include: Are there other moments that machines and their human interlocutors can have an effect in the world, in our cities? How does rapid prototyping contribute to building? Can 3d printing in disaster areas address critical shelter necessities? How will this change the shape of our physical environments?
