Paris' role in the transformation of visual culture across the long nineteenth century continues to maintain a hold on the discipline of the history of art and design and contemporary culture. Why? This course immerses students in the 18th-early 20th centuries' histories of French material and visual culture through seminar sessions, on-site visits and walking tours in order to investigate this question. Through discussions, readings, writing, and most importantly close looking of objects in Paris collections and spaces, students will engage in an in-depth study of the century's major themes and interpretations.
