Sport and Society explores the relationships among sports, society, and culture. This course examines how sport reflects and influences various social dynamics, including issues of race, class, gender, sexuality, and national identity. Students engage with sociological theories and methodologies to analyze the role of sports in socialization, the construction of identities, and how sport can and has challenged social norms and values. We will also explore economics and sport, focusing both on the corporate histories of major sports as well as the growing influence of gambling. Lastly, we will analyze the powerful relationship between sport and media, focusing on the symbiotic growth between particular pro (and college) sports and various media.
