A Critical Conversations Event

This exhibition invites you to engage with diverse perspectives on identity, civic engagement, and activism, through art that tackles critical sociopolitical issues. The submissions we received were both profound and expansive, reflecting a rich tapestry of ideas. The selected works delve into a variety of compelling themes, including:

Cultural Representation and Erasure: Examining how cultures are depicted and the impact of their disappearance.

Environmental Impact and Resource Overexploitation: Considering how power dynamics affect environmental degradation and resource depletion.

Human Intimacy and Vulnerability: Reflecting on the depth of human connections and emotional openness.

Media and Power: Investigating the relationship between media representation and the dynamics of power.

Mental Health Awareness and Belonging: Raising consciousness about mental health issues and the quest for a sense of community.

Resistance and Resilience: Celebrating the strength and determination in the face of adversity.

Social and Personal Identity: Exploring the nuances of self-perception and collective identity.

Structural Violence and Normalization: Addressing the often-hidden violence embedded in societal structures and its routine acceptance.

Systemic Oppression and Marginalization: Highlighting the effects of systemic injustices and the experiences of marginalized communities.

We invite you to immerse yourself in the art show and connect with the perspectives and experiences it presents. As you engage with each piece, reflect on how it resonates with you and why. This show is not just an exhibition—it’s an opportunity to deepen your understanding and engage in meaningful dialogue about the world around us.

Pratt Institute’s mission is to educate students to become creative, responsible professionals who will contribute fully to society. The Institute upholds values and standards that support that mission and holds high expectations regarding the conduct of students, faculty, staff, and administrators. Above all, we respect one another and behave in ways that advance the free association of people and ideas. We cherish the diversity represented by our people and their disparate values and ideas. At the same time, we expect each student, faculty, and staff member to value and uphold the community standards essential to the pursuit of academic excellence and social responsibility.

Pratt Institute takes the view that any action by one person that causes harm to another person will not be tolerated. Bullying, harassment, or any behavior that causes disruption to a community member’s ability to learn conflicts with the values of Pratt Institute and violates the community member’s right to feel protected, nurtured, and valued.

This event is part of Critical Conversations: creating space for and educating one another about our multiple cultural contexts, activism, civil discourse, and academic engagement.
