Dignity in Design

A Critical Conversations Event

On June 29, 2023, the Supreme Court issued a ruling addressing the use of race in university admissions, declaring such practices as discriminatory and involving racial stereotyping. Likewise, on March 6, 2024, a federal court ruled that a minority business agency must also serve white people, based on the principle of equal access to resources and services for all individuals, regardless of their race.

The open discussion will explore how these court rulings will impact the fields of art, design, architecture, and construction. The focus will be on understanding how these changes will affect students, employment opportunities, and support for small businesses in these industries. Additionally, there is concern about the representation of minorities in the art and design community and how these changes may further exacerbate existing challenges in building and growing a diverse community, as well as in the design of spaces as a whole.

Objectives:

  • Understand the concerns of the community
  • Learn different perspectives
  • Brainstorming together about the direction and the collective action

This event is part of Critical Conversations: creating space for and educating one another about our multiple cultural contexts, activism, civil discourse, and academic engagement.
