Opening Reception: Dona Ann McAdams “Black | Box” and Abby Robinson “AutoWorks & WaterWorks”
April 17, 2025 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Pratt Manhattan Gallery

Join us for the opening reception for two new photography exhibitions at Pratt Manhattan Gallery on Thursday, April 17, from 6-8pm! Showcasing the powerful work of two influential photographers, the two exhibitions – Black | Box by Dona Ann McAdams and Abby Robinson: AutoWorks and WaterWorks – celebrate the rich history of American photography, activism, and self-expression.
Dona Ann McAdams: Black | Box
In this deeply personal memoir exhibition, McAdams combines over 50 years of black and white photography with her own poetic reflections. Her work documents the dynamic history of late 20th-century America, from the Queer Liberation Movement to the performance art scene. Featuring images of iconic figures such as Angela Davis and David Wojnarowicz, Black | Box is a tribute to McAdams’ lifelong journey as a photographer and community activist. A conversation between McAdams and poet Eileen Myles about the memoir will take place on May 15.
Abby Robinson: AutoWorks & WaterWorks
This exhibition highlights the intimate and transformative work of Abby Robinson, featuring two of her iconic series: AutoWorks and WaterWorks. Until her death in July 2024, Robinson spent decades exploring self-portraiture and gender roles, captured through both small black-and-white prints in AutoWorks and larger color pieces in WaterWorks. The exhibition will also include Robinson’s personal notebooks and a unique shower curtain used as a living canvas. Curated by Antonella Pelizzari, the exhibition offers a glimpse into Robinson’s intimate creative process.
This event is open to the public.
