Pratt Institute participated in NYCxDESIGN, New York City’s official citywide celebration of design, through a variety of exhibitions and presentations of work in venues around the city from May 3 to 17. Highlights of NYCxDESIGN included Pratt Design 2016, BKLYN DESIGNS, and the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), which together showcased work by approximately 400 Pratt students, faculty, and alumni, and saw record-breaking attendance figures.
Pratt Design 2016 displayed exceptional design work by seniors and postgraduates from Pratt’s School of Design at the ARC Building on the Brooklyn campus from May 12 to 16. Attendance this year more than doubled compared with 2015. Nearly 4,800 visitors, including more than 1,600 who attended an evening industry and alumni reception on May 12, viewed a diverse range of “what’s next” concepts in advertising, communications design, fashion design, graphic design, illustration, industrial design, interactive design, interior design, jewelry design, and package design.
This year, Pratt was an institutional partner of BKLYN DESIGNS, the annual design event that showcases a cross section of design, architecture, and art, and highlights the creative economy in Brooklyn. Pratt’s participation in the event, which was held at Brooklyn Expo Center in Greenpoint from May 6 to 8, included an exhibition featuring work of students and alumni, a Pratt Institute’s Brooklyn Fashion + Design Accelerator showcase, drawing and illustration workshops, and work by Pratt jewelry designers on sale at the BKLYN Buys area of the show.
More than 35,000 industry trade professionals attended the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) at the Javits Center in Manhattan from May 14 to 17, shattering previous attendance records from the event’s 28-year history, according to event organizers. Work by Pratt students and graduates from Pratt’s Industrial Design Department was featured at ICFF in an exhibition titled Post-Digital.
With events held at many different locations, NYCxDESIGN and Pratt offered a free shuttle bus service that ran through Manhattan and Brooklyn to the design fairs taking place from May 14 to 16. The service was convenient and popular, with crowds of visitors taking advantage of it to reach NYCxDESIGN events, including Pratt Design.
