Biography
Alex Tahinos earned his Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was awarded the AIA Henry Adams Medal and the Paul Philippe Cret Medal for outstanding academic achievement. He also graduated with design excellence from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science in Architecture. In 2017, Alex received the AIA Pennsylvania Award for his exemplary contributions to the field of architecture.
In 2024, Alex founded fka design, a multidisciplinary office that engages in a broad range of design scales and scopes. Prior to establishing fka design, has held leadership positions at renowned firms such as ODA, Studio Libeskind, and UN Studio, and has collaborated with forward-thinking architects like Mark Foster Gage, SU11, and Young & Ayata. His diverse professional portfolio includes international projects such as the Infinity Tower in Shanghai, the Nokia Arena in Finland, the Tikva Jewish Museum in Lisbon, and the Terrarium in Seoul. Additionally, Alex’s work spans key urban developments in cities like Boston, Jerusalem, Dubai, Amsterdam, and New York, where his designs merge advanced technology with local narratives, continually pushing the boundaries of contemporary architecture.
Alex’s work has been exhibited internationally at the Venice Biennale, in Shanghai, Brooklyn, and Philadelphia. His contributions have been featured in Architect Magazine, Inflection Journal, Pressing Matters, and Suckerpunch Daily, where he continues to explore the intersections of architecture, technology, and speculative futures.
At Pratt Institute, Alex teaches within the core studio and mediums tracks in the Master of Architecture program, as well as in the School of Continuing and Professional Studies. His teaching explores advanced modeling, drawing, and design, often integrating research interests in sustainability, digital techniques, and hybrid environments. He has also delivered lectures at Universidad del Valle in Cali, Colombia, and The Ohio State University. His current lecture series, Sampling, delves into the creative process of recontextualizing cultural, digital, and environmental elements, focusing on hybrid ecosystems where human, digital, and natural environments converge—a theme that informs his broader research in sustainability, cognitive geography, and critical philosophies of design.
Alex’s innovative thinking and leadership continue to shape both the practice and education of the next generation of architects.
