Biography
Deb Johnson has been a part of the Pratt Community since 1981. She graduated from the Industrial Design program in 1986. She worked as a museum exhibit designer for Ralph Appelbaum Associates, Blumlien Design Associates and began teaching at Pratt in 1988. She founded the Executive Director of the Brooklyn Fashion + Design Accelerator, a research, manufacturing and small business incubator dedicated to the integration of sustainability and technology into apparel. Deb also founded the Center for Sustainable Design Strategies (now the Sustainability Center) at Pratt Institute in 2009 and led the integration of sustainability into Pratt’s art, design and architecture programs for over 15 years. She started PALS, the Partnership for Academic Leadership for Sustainability, which brought together 40 art and design institutions to collaborate on advancing sustainable design, in 2010. Johnson chaired Pratt’s Industrial Design program from 1997-2005. Currently she is the founder and Executive director of The Swimming Hole Foundation, a residency program that brings diverse groups of artists, designers, educators and creative thinkers together to collaborate on projects.
