Biography
Jason Urban is an artist, writer, and teacher based in Brooklyn, NY. Urban holds a BFA from Kutztown University (Kutztown, PA) and an MA/MFA from the University of Iowa (Iowa City, IA). His work has been featured in numerous venues and publications both nationally and internationally. Since 2012, Urban and Leslie Mutchler formed JULMstudios. As a collaborative duo, they exercise a coequal approach to art and life that focuses on research and problem-solving. With a relationship of physical to metaphysical in mind, their practice is increasingly about the natural world and the way digital technologies influence and distort our relationship to nature.
For ten years prior to relocating to Brooklyn, Urban taught Print at the University of Texas at Austin where he was Area Head of Print, Director of the Guest Artist in Print Program (GAPP), and founder of the UT Riso Room, a student-run risographic service bureau and image research lab. He has taught at a number of schools including Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Tyler School of Art (Temple University), Maryland Institute College of Art, and Bucknell University.
As a supplement to his research and teaching, Urban co-wrote and co-edited Printeresting.org, the thinking person’s favorite online resource for interesting printmaking miscellany. In 2011, Creative Capital | Warhol Foundation awarded Printeresting an ArtsWriters Grant.
Urban joined the faculty of Pratt Institute’s Undergraduate Communication Design Department in 2019. He teaches a range of courses including Independent Publishing, Post Artifact Books, Image As Communication, Dynamic Imagery, and Integrated VisCom 2: New Forms.
