Jonathan Martin is a Professor in the Graduate Center for Planning and the Environment at Pratt Institute and brings more than 25 years of professional and academic experience in design, architecture and planning. His professional experiences range from comprehensive planning and urban design, to architecture and furniture design. He has worked professionally in Arizona, Pennsylvania, Upstate New York, and, most recently, New York City.

After working professionally in architecture in Phoenix, Arizona, Dr. Martin attended graduate school at Cornell University, where his academic studies focused on land use, urban design and housing affordability. Presently, in addition to his full time teaching, Dr. Martin is Associate Principal at BFJ Planning, one of New York City’s leading urban planning consultants, where he specializes in urban design, physical planning, zoning and form-based codes. His professional work ranges from urban design and comprehensive planning to planning facilitation. His recent professional project include transit-oriented development plans for a variety of municipalities in the New York Metro Area and facilitation of planning processes for the City of New York, including South Street Seaport, East Midtown Rezoning, and the SoHo/NoHo Community Engagement Plan. Prior to joining BFJ, Martin was an associate at VHB/Saccardi and Schiff, Inc. in White Plains, NY, where he specialized in comprehensive planning, site analysis, impact and economic analyses, and urban design.

Dr. Martin teaches a range of courses from advanced planning methods to urban design and overseas courses in Japan and Denmark. Reflecting his professional and academic background, Dr. Martin’s courses seek to balance theory and practice by conveying subject knowledge and professional intelligence to enable students to effectively and ethically navigate the world of professional practice. His current research projects include an analysis of public space and urban planning in Japan. Dr. Martin was a Fulbright Researcher/Lecturer Fellow in 2019 and served as a visiting lecturer/researcher at Tokyo Institute of Technology in Tokyo.
