Biography
Josh Steinbauer is an award-winning filmmaker, musical composer, and visual artist. As a resident of New York City for the last 16 years, he’s been engaged in all three of these overlapping creative communities.
As a filmmaker, he co-founded the video production company Perfect And Orbicular which has produced two feature films, numerous narrative and documentary shorts, commercials, and over a dozen music videos. His feature documentary memoir Paper Stars and his recent short film Cap’n Flapjack have screened in festivals all over the world, including Prague Independent Film Festival, Chicago’s BLOW-UP Arthouse Film Festival, and the Toronto Independent Film Festival where it won Best Documentary. Josh was also the recipient of Best Concept from Brightside Film Festival, Art of Brooklyn’s Best Short, Reading Film’s Best Short, and the People’s Choice Award from IPFF. The Harvard Art Museum commissioned the film “Pyramidal” which he co-created with ESPTV. His short films have been published in numerous culture sites: Nowhere Magazine, Terrain, Aerogram, Moving Poems, AMP, Switchback, Scroll.in, BrooklynOnDemand, and the Times of India.
As a musician and composer, he has performed in dozens of NYC venues and produced 7 albums of music, soundscapes, and storytelling.
As a visual artist, his work has been seen in Heaven, Third Ward, No Moon, Gen Art, 3 Walls galleries, and The American Folk Art Museum. His artwork has been published in numerous art/culture sites: In Parenthesis, Harpy Hybrid, Rain Taxi, Block, The Offing, and Medicine For A Nightmare. He has been a featured speaker in the Goa and Chennai Art festivals, as well as the American Folk Art Museum.
Education
Graduated from Maryland Institute, College of Art in the 90s.
