Biography
Creator of more than 40 books for children; awards include the Coretta Scott King Award, the Horn Book-Boston Globe Award, the Orbis Pictus Award for nonfiction, the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work as one of the illustrators for Our Children Can Soar (Bloomsbury, 2009); worked as a producer and writer for Gullah Gullah Island, a Nickelodeon children’s show; cohosted Cover to Cover, a cable TV talk show about children’s books creators on BCAT, a Time Warner channel; serves as a Council Member of the Authors Guild; the Authors Guild Foundation, the Authors League Fund, the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), and is a member of the Writers Guild; serves as Chair for the Society of Illustrators’ Founders Award for The Original Art Show; teaches children’s book illustration at Pratt and Parsons The New School for Design; well-published former students of the class include David Ezra Stein, Galia Bernstein, Hiroe Nakata, Amber Alvarez and Julian Hector.
