Summer Scholars is excited to launch a program of art and design studio classes for middle and high school students for two-weeks in July.
All Center K-12 programs introduce the strengths of an art and design education through courses in art, design, and related fields. Classes are taught by faculty from the Schools of Art, Design, and Architecture
Classes
The program is organized by grade, so participants must meet the grade requirement – no exceptions.
Architecture Grades 9-12
In this class, students will explore the beginnings of architectural world-building that brings together multiple streams of prototyping. The class will oscillate between physical and digital drawings and model-making towards an architectural world-building which will be discussed across mixed reality. Students will gain experience in physical model-making, physical drawing, digital model-making with introductions to software workflows used in the collegiate architectural class. Tuition; $395
Drawing The Figure (ADE 100) Grades 11-12
The class is devoted to studying the figure. Through working from the human form (observing oneself, household members, or even observing figures on television) students will acquire an understanding of the figure’s structure, vitality, character, and movement. In studio activities, students will develop a range of abilities to visualize and communicate three-dimensional information on a two-dimensional surface. Tuition; $1,153
Drawing The Object Grades 9-12
Moving from the fundamentals of linear description to the integration of tone, students learn to use value in conjunction with line to achieve a synthesis of form, space, composition, and content. Tuition; $395
Painting Grades 9-12
Students explore many approaches to painting with a range of water-based materials. Students acquire a knowledge of painting processes and concepts, helping them build a strong and varied body of work in painting. Tuition; $395
Sustainable Fashion + Textile Exploration Grades 9-12
Through a series of hands-on lessons, high school students explore sustainable fashion, developing and understanding circular design, holistic approaches to recycling textiles, and the importance of upcycling and zero waste thinking. Scholars design techniques to enhance awareness and understanding of sustainable fashion practices and making informed textile choices. Through the Sustainable exploration, high school students are encouraged to increase sustainable literacy & practices in the fashion and textiles practices. Tuition; $395
Middle School Portfolio Development Grades 7-8
This course is ideal for students interested in improving their ability to draw from observation and who might be considering applying to portfolio audition high schools. Students will work directly from a variety of still life objects or models using a range of drawing materials: pencil, oil pastel, charcoal and others. Projects will focus on depicting 3D forms situated in space as revealed through natural or artificial light. Tuition; $320
Pratt Institute reserves the right to cancel or change any class when circumstances warrant.
Eligibility
Students are eligible to apply to the Summer Scholars program who:
- For middle school classes, will be entering the 7th or 8th grade in the 2024-2025 school year
- For high school classes, will be entering the 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade in the 2024-2025 school year
- Demonstrate an interest in art and design
- Commit to attending the whole program

Classes Meet: July 8-19, Monday – Friday. Class times vary and will be listed on the application.
Registration
The registration period for summer 2024 will open ON APRIL 16th AT 9:00 AM. CLASSES ARE FILLED ON A FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE BASIS.
Submit completed registration form by email during the registration period listed above.
If requesting financial aid, please submit a separate financial aid application within the registration period listed above.
Confirmation
Please note that sending in a completed application form does not guarantee that you have secured a place in a class. After registration closes, those who have secured a place in a class will receive a confirmation email. If a class you selected is full, you will be placed on a waiting list and notified by email. If a place becomes available, we will contact those on the waiting list.
Tuition
Full payment is due upon receipt of emailed invoice, which will be sent after confirmation of enrollment. Tuition is non-refundable and non-transferable. The price per class is listed in the description. A 2.5 percent fee will be applied to credit card payments for the 1 credit course and will be processed separately from the other courses.
