Research Open House

Every year, Pratt’s Research Yard opens its doors to visitors for its largest event: the Research Open House. The Research Open House began in Spring 2018 with an in-person tour of a small number of research demonstrations and has grown over the years to include projects from every school at Pratt.

Fall 2024 Events

  • The Office of Research and Strategic Partnerships and Pratt faculty hosted a team from Volvo (Sweden & China), in a visit coordinated by Amit Kalra, Graduate Communications Design faculty, and Anita Cooney, Dean of the School of Design.  We learned about Volvo’s design and innovation priorities and processes, and how they coincide with emergent concerns (sustainability, innovative materials, UX design, and product testing), while Volvo’s team had interest in how we integrate sustainability into curriculum and design practice courses. The outcomes of this visit include potential collaborations with Pratt in communications design and sustainable production and testing, and partnership on production-based initiatives.
  • A delegation from Sweden–which included several Members of Parliament–visited Pratt campus and the Research Yard.  Of interest was how we navigate the political arena as a non-profit/educational institution, including how we work in cross-sectoral partnerships, how our work impacts public policy, and how investment in research and education drives US economic growth.
  • The Research Yard hosted the 2024 PALS Summit on October 17-19. Founded in 2010 at Pratt, PALS–the Partnership on Academic Leadership in Sustainability– is a national platform for sustainability leaders in art and design higher education to address global climate change, environmental and social justice, and other key sustainability issues. PALS’ value lies in its ability to leverage collective resources and foster a community of peer institutions to integrate sustainability into the core of art and design education.
  • Agency Relationships:  President Bronet, Provost Heiland, and the Office for Research & Strategic Partnerships hosted EPA Administrator Michael Regan and his policy and strategy team. Several faculty members and Provost’s Center directors joined.  Following a Research Yard tour, the group discussed the EPA’s strategic priorities and alignment with Pratt’s capacities and priorities.  We see potential to develop a long-term relationship that serves both Pratt and the EPA.
  • Partnership Programming:  ORSP, Pratt researchers, and external partners kicked off Climate Week with a series of events at the Research Yard, including the Bio-Based Materials Showcase with the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and a water policy workshop with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and other local public and private sector stakeholders.
