NOTE:  Pratt is currently not accepting applications for the visiting student program.

The Visiting Student Program at Pratt is open to students who are currently enrolled in a degree-seeking undergraduate program at another college or university and will have completed one full year of college credit by the time of enrollment. International students are eligible to participate. The program has been designed as an opportunity for students to broaden their college experience and is intended as a supplement to the undergraduate program at their home institution. Visiting Students at Pratt Institute are not ordinarily permitted to apply for transfer admissions. Visiting students must be accepted for fall or spring but not for summer. Visiting students must enroll for 12 credits.

If you are planning to take only one or two courses, please see the section on non-degree students. Note: international students are not eligible to attend as a non-matriculated student (taking one or two courses). 

As a visiting student, you may take any undergraduate course at Pratt that is approved by the appropriate chairperson and academic advisor based on your prerequisites and your portfolio and transcript. Visiting students may not enroll in graduate level courses. We encourage students to have a wide selection of courses ready at the time of registration. You can find our selection of courses here.

Deadlines and Instructions

Spring Semester

Application must be submitted by November 1. Notification is mid-December.

Fall Semester

Application must be submitted by March 1. Notification is mid-May.

How To Apply

  1. Submit your application electronically atpratt.slideroom.com. The online application enables you to do the following:
    1. Pay the $50 fee with a credit card online
    2. Request your recommendation/statement of good standing from your academic dean or academic advisor online; the recommendation letter and statement of good standing is uploaded by your recommender. (Pratt will also accept a written letter from your recommender mailed directly to Pratt.)  
    3. Submit your portfolio online: 12–20 images from your studio courses
  2. Submit official transcripts from all colleges or universities attended. Students submitting transcripts in a language other than English must submit an English translation of their official transcript. Your transcript must be mailed by your college to: Pratt Institute, Office of Undergraduate Admissions, 200 Willoughby Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11205.
  3. English Proficiency: To be considered for the Visiting Student Program, you must be comfortable with rapid and idiomatic spoken English. If you are an international student and your home language is not English and if your primary language of instruction has not been English for at least five years, you are required to take an English proficiency examination. Both exams listed below are given all over the world several times a year.
    1. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language). Visit www.toefl.org for more information. A minimum score of 550 (paper-based test) or 79 (Internet-based test) is required for admission. Your score must be reported directly to Pratt by the testing service using report code 2669 Pratt Institute.
    2. IELTS (International English Language Testing System). Visit www.ielts.org for more information. A minimum score of 6.5 is required.
    3. PTE (Pearson Test of English). Visit www.pearsonpte.com for more information. A minimum score of 53 for the four-year programs and 48 for the two-year programs is required.

Please make sure that your email address on your application is valid.  Decisions and communications regarding application will be emailed to you. Be sure to arrangements with your internet provider to allow Pratt email to be received.

Transfer Admission: students who enroll at Pratt as Visiting Students are not eligible to apply for transfer admission. If you are interested in transfer admission, please click here.

Financial aid: There is no financial aid available from Pratt for Visiting Students. Financial aid from your home institution may transfer to Pratt. Please consult with your home institution’s Financial Aid Office.

Housing: Housing for visiting Students is not guaranteed, but we will make every effort to accommodate students who wish to live on campus. Admitted students will be notified at the time of admission if we are able to provide on-campus housing.
