COSMOS

By Peter Sim

"COSMOS, modeled upon our universe, is a chair that aims to strengthen the relationship between objects and humans by exploring non-linear human processes, incorporating tangible fantasy, and creating intuitive interactions beyond cognitive understanding. The chair comprises 400 parts assembled together, blending different styles from different times, and combining digital and analog craftsmanship.

COSMOS is inspired by the Brooklyn micro-manufacturing movement, where makers shared tools and worked with limited resources to create products normally made by large scale operations. In the post-Brooklyn micro-manufacturing era, I’m exploring the limits of what’s possible when modern technology and traditional woodworking is combined and employed in a non-industrial makerspace. In order to create the organic forms of COSMOS, I used virtual reality and AI to immersively design the chairs, and custom CNC to cut custom joinery. For the next iteration of COSMOS, I’m striving to create a design that maintains the fantastical essence of its origins, but more practically fits into our daily lives."
