Ease : Cognitively Accessible Walking Aid

By Thanat Somwong

"Ease is a walking aid specifically designed for individuals living with dementia and other cognitive disabilities, ensuring they can walk safely and confidently. It addresses gaps in the design of mobility aids, which often do not account for the unique needs of individuals with cognitive impairments and may unintentionally create challenges. By incorporating cognitive accessibility principles—such as intuitive colors, shapes, and configurations—Ease empowers people with dementia to navigate their surroundings with greater ease and independence.

Inspired by research on cognitive accessibility and human-centered design, Ease responds to the challenges individuals with dementia face when using conventional mobility aids, including difficulties with spatial awareness, attention span, and visual perception. Through an inclusive design approach, it enhances safety and usability with an ergonomically curved handle, a stable base, and visually distinct materials, minimizing cognitive strain while promoting well-being.

This project contributes to the broader discussion within Area 1: Experiential Health and Technology by advancing inclusive design for individuals with cognitive challenges and aging populations. It demonstrates how assistive devices can enhance mobility, provide reassurance, and support independence. By prioritizing cognitive accessibility, Ease showcases how thoughtful design can enable individuals with dementia and cognitive disabilities to move through the world with greater autonomy and dignity.
At the 2025 Research Open House, Ease will highlight the transformative potential of human-centered design in assistive tools, shaping a more inclusive future for cognitively diverse communities."

Three walking canes—yellow, blue, and orange—stand upright near a sunlit window with a view of a red brick building. The canes have looped handles and four-point star-shaped bases. Nearby, a mop and other studio items rest against the wall and wooden floorboards.
Three colorful walking canes with sculptural loop handles and star-shaped bases are displayed upright on a wooden workbench in a well-organized workshop. Various tools, including screwdrivers, a hammer, and measuring instruments, are hung on a white pegboard in the background.
A person wearing a dark denim jacket, matching pants, a cream-colored sweatshirt, and a black cap stands indoors on a wooden floor, holding a blue sculptural cane with a loop handle and star-shaped base. They are positioned near a window with natural light and a wall adorned with abstract charcoal drawings.
