Ananda Ray is a new media artist exploring the intersections of race and technology. Her artistic journey began with a profound curiosity about the world around her, leading her to experiment with various mediums, from virtual reality to sculpture. In 2022, her work Reflections of Resistance was featured as Pratt’s contribution to Black ArtStory Month with Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership. The interactive public mural used augmented reality and focused on the contributions of Black women to American social movements. Informed by her commitment to research and inquiry, Ray’s interdisciplinary approach draws inspiration from historical narratives, contemporary discourse, and personal experiences. “My artistic output is tailored specifically for Black audiences, a demographic often marginalized in the realms of new media platforms. Consequently, observers may struggle to grasp or engage with my work due to limited exposure or willingness to comprehend its cultural and racial context. What’s important to me is fostering awareness regarding the pervasive societal inequities at play. The consequences of not creating unbiased and fair technology platforms could be significant and have lasting effects.”
