GENESIS DESIRE SPACE, 2024

Kemi Alade
5 min looped Digital Film

Part of the exhibition
Pieces of You, Peices of Me
August 5–September 28, 2024

A triptych of images with a strong narrative connection. The top image features bullet-like objects arranged in a semi-circle. The middle image is a close-up of someone applying red lipstick, and the bottom image shows ultrasound scans with a handwritten note. The combination of these images suggests themes of violence, femininity, and perhaps the fragility of life.

Kemi Alade is a queer, Black, moving image artist and photographer from Texas. Her work peers into the in- tricate realm of human emotions and identity. In 2023, Alade’s lesbian drama BOUNDARIES was screened as part of the Out at the Movies International Film Festival in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Her film Genesis Desire Space delves into the physical nature of desire and love. In 2024, it was included in the Pratt student exhibition Transfigured. In her most recent film, SEGUN, she uses textiles and photographs to tell a disconnected story of love for one’s father and tales of home. “As an artist, I strive to craft narratives that offer glimpses into the pivotal experiences of characters and draw viewers into their inner worlds. My work is mostly characterized by a focus on the nuances of emotion and physical closeness. Through my artistic journey, I embark on voyages of self-exploration, seeking to uncover deeper truths about myself and the world around me.”
