HIS LAST PIECES, 2024

36x48” Oil on canvas

Part of the exhibition
Pieces of You, Pieces of Me
August 5–September 28, 2024

A figurative painting of a muscular male figure with a complex, mosaic-like texture covering his skin. The figure's face is fragmented into geometric pieces, some of which appear to be floating away. The background features a mysterious, red-hued environment with a mountainous structure, adding a narrative depth to the composition.

Born in Haiti, Morvens Regis discovered a passion for painting during his freshman year of high school. Initially focused on portraits, Regis has developed a keen interest in figure drawing, now incorporating it into his work. Specializing in portraits and figurative painting, he primarily uses acrylics and has recently ventured into oil paints. Regis’ work often captures the essence of his subjects through detail and emotion. Drawing inspiration from Renaissance masters, Regis aims to incorporate their techniques into his paintings. Overall, his work reflects a blend of classical inspiration and personal evolution. “My cultural heritage has moved me more toward figurative work rather than landscape and abstract work. Growing up in Haiti I saw a lot of sculptures in the national museum such as the “negres noir” and other sculptures. Just being able to capture the gestures and the actions always felt powerful to me. This specifically inspires me to apply aspects of sculptural dynamics in my paintings. The Renaissance period captured a lot of that, which is one of the reasons why I admire a lot of artists from that period. Their way of capturing movement and the atmosphere of a place in their painting and sculpting has always stood out to me. I aim to combine aspects of my culture with their way of painting.”
